Biography
Franziska Kuba ist Dirigentin und Professorin für Chorleitung an der Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Im Zentrum ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit steht die A-cappella-Musik mit einem Repertoire, das von Alter Musik bis zu zahlreichen Uraufführungen reicht. Seit 2025 ist sie künstlerische Leiterin des Bayerischen Landesjugendchores, seit 2018 leitet sie das Vocalconsort Leipzig und seit 2019 die von ihr gegründete Neue Kammer.
Als freie Dirigentin arbeitet Kuba regelmäßig mit professionellen Chören und Ensembles zusammen. Engagements führten sie unter anderem zum WDR Rundfunkchor, Rundfunkchor Berlin, MDR-Rundfunkchor, zum Chor der Oper Leipzig und zum European Union Baroque Orchestra sowie an das Konzerthaus Berlin und das Theater Heidelberg. Mit dem WDR Rundfunkchor verbindet sie eine wiederholte Zusammenarbeit: Neben den „Mauskonzerten“ dirigiert sie den WDR Rundfunkchor auch in eigenen Konzertprogrammen. 2021 wurde sie beim Deutschen Chordirigent*innenpreis des RIAS Kammerchores mit dem Publikumspreis ausgezeichnet.
Seit 2025 ist Kuba künstlerische Leiterin des Bayerischen Landesjugendchores, der mit rund 65 Sänger*innen im Alter von 16 bis 27 Jahren fest im bayerischen Musikleben verankert ist. Ihre Arbeit mit dem Ensemble umfasst Chormusik unterschiedlicher Epochen ebenso wie Uraufführungen und interdisziplinäre Projekte. Inhaltlich setzt sie dabei immer wieder gesellschaftlich relevante Themen in den Mittelpunkt. Unter ihrer Leitung war der Landesjugendchor unter anderem beim Deutschen Chorfest gemeinsam mit dem Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks zu erleben.
Mit dem Vocalconsort Leipzig entwickelt Kuba dramaturgisch konzipierte A-cappella-Programme und widmet sich einem breiten Repertoire. Zugleich widmet sich das Ensemble der Leipziger Chortradition und ist regelmäßig in den Motetten der Thomaskirche und beim Bachfest zu erleben. Konzertreisen führten das Vocalconsort zuletzt nach Frankreich und Polen; zudem entstand eine gemeinsame CD-Produktion.
2019 gründete Kuba die Neue Kammer, deren künstlerische Leitung sie seitdem innehat. Das professionelle Ensemble aus Sänger*innen und Streicher*innen arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von Alter und zeitgenössischer Musik und verbindet diese mit Performance, Tanz, Bildender Kunst und Video. Auftragswerke und Uraufführungen von Komponist*innen wie Anna Korsun, Philipp Rücker, Sarvenaz Safari und Kilian Verburg stehen dabei neben neu erschlossenen Werken Alter Musik. 2023 gastierte die Neue Kammer im Rahmen des Jubiläums „70 Jahre Deutscher Musikrat“ in der Berliner Philharmonie.
Neben ihrer Konzerttätigkeit wird Franziska Kuba regelmäßig als Jurorin und Dozentin eingeladen. Sie wirkt unter anderem beim Deutschen Chorwettbewerb und im Forum Dirigieren mit und gibt Workshops und Fortbildungen, insbesondere für Chorleiter*innen und Kirchenmusiker*innen.
Vor ihrer Berufung nach Detmold lehrte Kuba an der Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. Sie studierte Schulmusik, Geschichte, Chordirigieren und Gesang in Leipzig und Weimar.
Franziska Kuba is a conductor and Professor of Choral Conducting at the Detmold University of Music. A cappella music lies at the heart of her artistic work, with a repertoire ranging from early music to numerous world premieres. Since 2025, she has been Artistic Director of the Bavarian State Youth Choir; she has conducted Vocalconsort Leipzig since 2018 and, since 2019, Neue Kammer, an ensemble she founded herself.
As a freelance conductor, Kuba regularly works with professional choirs and ensembles. Her engagements have included the WDR Radio Choir, Rundfunkchor Berlin, MDR Radio Choir, the Chorus of Leipzig Opera and the European Union Baroque Orchestra, as well as appearances at Konzerthaus Berlin and Theater Heidelberg. She has an ongoing collaboration with the WDR Radio Choir, conducting both the „Mauskonzerte“ (“Mouse Concerts”) and concert programmes of her own. In 2021, she received the Audience Award at the German Choral Conductors’ Prize, organised by the RIAS Chamber Choir.
Since 2025, Kuba has been Artistic Director of the Bavarian State Youth Choir, whose approximately 65 singers aged 16 to 27 form an established part of Bavaria’s musical life. Her work with the ensemble encompasses choral music from different periods as well as world premieres and projects at the intersection of music and other artistic forms. These programmes regularly engage with socially relevant themes. Under her direction, the choir has appeared at the German Choral Festival, among other events, alongside the Bavarian Radio Chorus.
With Vocalconsort Leipzig, Kuba develops dramaturgically conceived a cappella programmes with a broad repertoire. At the same time, the ensemble engages closely with Leipzig’s choral tradition and regularly performs in the motets at St Thomas Church and at the Bachfest Leipzig. Recent concert tours have taken Vocalconsort to France and Poland, and the ensemble has also recorded a CD under her direction.
In 2019, Kuba founded Neue Kammer and has served as its Artistic Director ever since. The professional ensemble of singers and string players works at the intersection of early and contemporary music, combining these traditions with performance, dance, visual art and video. Commissions and world premieres by composers including Anna Korsun, Philipp Rücker, Sarvenaz Safari and Kilian Verburg are presented alongside rediscovered works of early music. In 2023, Neue Kammer appeared at the Berlin Philharmonie as part of the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the German Music Council.
Alongside her concert work, Franziska Kuba is regularly invited to serve as a jury member and workshop leader. Her activities include the German Choir Competition and the Forum Dirigieren, and she leads workshops and professional development courses, particularly for choral conductors and church musicians.
Before her appointment in Detmold, Kuba taught at the Freiburg University of Music. She studied music education, history, choral conducting and voice in Leipzig and Weimar.
In order to save the classical music scene, it seems to make sense to involve the audience.
